The shortest version I'll manage to bring myself to give you is that at first, Nintendo really didn't like people playing the game in a competitive manner for monetary prizes. They basically did what they could to keep the scene completely isolated and not acknowledge it whatsoever, and then Brawl was, mechanically, a massive middle finger to every single competitive Melee fan.
Afterwards, they came around a bit on the "competitive" idea, but still just don't like that a good number of people prefer the older one to their new shiny version. They also fucking HATE anyone trying to modify the game, even to just make it more accessible. See: Nintendo taking down a tournament for using a mod that lets you play Melee online, in the smack dab middle of the fucking pandemic.
I could fill the fucking thread about this but that'd be off topic and terrible so I'll stop here and say nothing more about the subject.
