Aparently they make money out of merch, but it's much less than other sources, which is kinda insane.
Basically it's going into anycolors purse, but it's a little exaggerated to say they get nothing.

The crazy part is, that hololive gives their talents the biggest cut in merch and that is widely known, so anycolor basically betrayed the fans and gachikoi, because there are a ton of them just buying 100s of these to support their favorite "Liver" just for them to end up getting little of that money.

Holos get a bigger cut of merch because they have to put in their own money in order to fund the merch. In Niji, the company handles everything. Since superchats are probably a 35% cut (35% AC, 30% Susan), merch could be a 30% cut, which is still good considering it's free money for the liver for 0 work/funding.

Sadly, yeah. This cookie cutter shit is basically the norm, save for the few odd cases where they do voice packs, or have special unique merch for their wave anniversaries.
It's sort of weird since even Selen made a stream about "What if we were able to make unique merch haha", and Seffyna from Niji's main branch/ex-KR sold her own merch at one point. But because Nijisanji has so many talents, they won't be able to make unique merch without having someone feel left out.

Some of them were in the past, though some also do eventually go indie after a while like Lulu. I suppose you can argue why join if they're comfortable where they are, but for some talents they join at various points in history where Nijisanji wasn't huge and there was little if possibly nothing to gain. Its more like the two mutually help each other in growing.
Granted, after a while it becomes a debate on whether new talents should join Nijisanji, there's like a 50-50 chance on whether you'll be better or worse off than before. Some of the new JPs are doing great, but the ENs not so much.
