People do all of the negative stuff whether or not you're shipped with someone. While no one will even dare to say X likes Y lest they be construed as 'shippers', you don't need to even be friends with someone to be perceived as disliking or hating them, so that's all that's 'permitted' to be talked about - how you possibly dislike someone. It doesn't stop anything. So rather than getting rid of the parts you hate, you signal boosted them by removing all the noise about liking anyone.
