I think thise whole vtuber thing is made as daughter simulation for kidults. Your mind unconsciously knows that you should have kids by now, so as a substitute activity, you watch a cute vtuber, to who a simulated bond grows, to fill the void of not having a daughter that you can watch playing. You get dopamine hits out of it, as if you'd watch your own daughter showing you video games she plays.
It's pretty great, as in japanese celebrate being young, even as young adults, as opposed to young white girls who pretend to be older. Guess with the low birth rate japanese have, they are the ones who need daughter simulator the most. But it does appeal to westerners as well, as in cute voice comes through even the langauge barrier, and it makes it even easier to suspend disbelief, because not understanding the speech makes it harder to notice how the act is forced, and you only focus on the cute girl noises.
Think about it, would you really watch just someone play a game that you don't care about? It's the player that sells. If you'd care for the gameplay, you'd go for some autist who breaks it down to details. If you'd just want the story, you'd go watch a silent playthrough, or play it yourself. You want to watch the cute girl react to the game, and do stuff, because you miss having one around.
