Lockdowns = Everyone had unlimited free time, so it was easy to take hours out of your day to just watch any vtuber that was streaming at the time
(On a tangent, anime production got fucked because of covid. So most anime fans gravitated towards vtubers because there wasn't really any good, new anime to watch.)
Then lockdowns ended and suddenly people had to go back to their daily lives. Less free time = they have to pick and choose what to do with it
Then lots of places ended/neutered wfm so even more people had less free time
I think a portion of it is also, the novelty of vtubers just wore off on a lot of people. Vtubing was a very new and fresh thing to 90% of the normies out there.
Vtubers really popped off when Miko's "niggaaaa" clip went giga viral.
