But that's not really a fair metric to use in a niche subculture group like vtubing. There's huge success right now, vtubers who have millions of followers, but that's due to the limited pool of fans right now.
When YouTube started, no one ever thought "you can live off the content you make here". But then eventually a few people did. And then even more. Now I wager there's at least 200k people who can live off of YouTube. Is it a lot of people? No. But that's a number that's tens of thousands of times greater than successful vtubers. There's room to grow, there'll be more success down the road.
Now, for the vast majority of indie vtubers now, do they suck? Yes 100%, they're awful and need to get better and stop following trends and try to pump put decent content.
