The USA was named as provitional name until they figured out a better one for the confederation of states it was, the idea of "american"= us citizen wasn't even meant to ever happen, you were always supoused to be texan/ virginian / north carolinian , ect, ect.
Of course, civil war happened, and washington got its undies twisted on the idea of it happening again, so tehy built a fake identity of "americaness" hijacking both "american" and "america" as the name of the confederation, turning into more of a country. By ww1 and 2 , that shit spread globaly.
Yet the original sense remains, every document calls the country "These United states", never america, nor their citizens "americans", because that's not their actual name. Hell, the original intention remains on old phrases: "Colombus discovered america", or "America for Americans" (wich the japanese stole into "Asia for asians" during their pacific murder spreee).
The us has no name, never decided on one, so its just a description of what really matters, their states, united in the american continent, argentina , mexico,and all countries really are "the argentine republic of america", "The brazilian federation of america", ect, ect, it's just unnecesary most of the time.
