To use your analogy, it's like a store you like is known for maple syrup, and they are damn good at making maple syrup. But only a dedicated few are buying the maple syrup.
So, to try and get more customers, the store starts selling honey. And it's the same as any other store's honey, just with a bit of the maple syrup mixed in. You don't care much for honey, but hey, it's not a problem, you can just ignore the honey. Maybe if people like the honey, they'll check out the maple syrup too.
Except they don't. They just keep coming for the honey. They never fucking shut up about the honey. Whenever you try to bring up "hey the maple syrup is good too" they just keep talking about fucking honey, even though it's almost identical to every other fucking honey out there.
