They probably started asking for part of their sub money, whereas before they basically took nothing. So the biggest girls probably figured that the services provided and "brand" (if you could call it that) weren't worth the money they would have to give up. Most of these girls were perfectly fine before VShoujo became a thing, so it's no surprise that they would be able to strike it out on their own again.

I suspect a combination of factors really. The major thing vShojo actually provides are marketing opportunities; like vShojo negotiates a contract to shill a product/game and the talent have a responsibility to shill it. I suspect these were pretty lucrative originally and paid the talent fairly well but new contracts from vShojo want to keep the lions share of the earnings.

The other financial issue with vShojo is because of the association with Mel, I'm certain they are being passed up over larger more mainstream marketing opportunities.

Finally, it doesn't seem any of the talent are really all that interested in working with each other. I suppose this is expected when you've got a bunch of catty western women gathered in the same organization.

I'm pretty sure it initially just started off as just a small circle that basically just shared artist contacts (i.e access to artists and riggers), with maybe a tighter collab community. But when they expanded to other people and started introducing administrative overhead, that's when they were looking for other revenue streams, which probably when merch started popping up. It's likely they were looking into providing additional services, which is why they would be looking to take more cuts from their streamers.

Got into the scene when Hololive was starting to blow up and there weren't much EN vtubers yet. There was the notion going on then that you'd really "made it" if you were part of a corpo and people weren't that educated yet on what that stuff entails so they thought Vshojo's model was a very good deal in being "hands off" compared to Hololive and Nijisanji(to a lesser extent). I swear twitch streamers are the dumbest bunch of streamers you can find. They're obsessed with all the worst things. Vshojo don't have to give a percent of their sub/donos it's true, but the company instead takes a larger cut of their merch sales. They prioritize subs over everything when it's merch that should be making them the real money. Gift subs especially are the greatest scam twitch ever pulled on its user base. They've somehow convinced streamers and viewers alike that giving twitch half their money is somehow better than straight donations. Gift subs have abysmal conversion rates to continual subs and the day they introduced saw a massive decrease in the amounts and frequency of donations.

Their company were VC-funded, and it used to be that VC money are just free-flowing, until recession hits and the tap dries out. This is why good companies able to navigate these VCs concern, and shield their talents from actual bad decision. Its CEO's job to be like "well, based on our experience, our way is better and fans accepts this while the growth still looking pretty good etc etc.....". Also partly why Cover emphasize quite alot on retaining talents so they probably have ammunitions if some VCs try to force them to do something

VCs don't care about what's good for the company, they only care about their #s. They aren't going to come in and talk strategy with cover, they would say "we want EBITDA to go up by X this quarter and X for the year" then if cover missed a target they'd come in trying to increase the company's percentage of SC and merch revenue. They don't care if talents walk or the company dies, either the company hits their metrics or they squeeze all the money out of it in a short timeframe and kill it.
Especially now when all the VCs are scaling back because of interest rates and the economy, if a company like cover wants more money to invest in building out new 3d studios or concerts, they'd probably just try to kill it.
VC are good when cash is cheap or you are in a fast growing business. Otherwise they're moronic and the only defense against their terrible ideas is to hope you didn't give them full control over your business. Which is why Cover was smart and went public to cash out their VCs and continue building for the long term.

As best we know, Cover was debt-financing in past years, not taking US-style VC funding. Similar dynamics might apply with some earlier investors but in a less extreme way.

I'm not even anticapitalist but if this was the reasoning then it's peak capitalism brainrot. Cover's financials are all public and their revenue is fantastic. If they stopped pissing away money on buzzword projects like their failed attempt at a metaverse (Cover simply does not have the software talent to produce a viable consumer-facing software product, it's why even their Live2D tech is literally years behind what hobbyists put online for free). Their concerts and merch drops print money, they have the best brand power in the entire sector. As long as they keep their big names happy they'll be fine provided they aren't hiring hundreds of useless bottom of the barrel developers to work on doomed products.

A strong cash rich company doesn't necessarily help a VC. They make their money by charging fees to people buying into their fund. They raise more capital by showing strong returns in their fund but even if cover is performing well it won't help their fund's performance if there isn't a path to cash out such as fast growth that can be used to attract a replacement VC/IPO, or if they are distributing cash to investors. Cover going public is one of the off-ramps VCs like and it allows outside investors who believe in the longterm growth of the company to come in to replace them.
