You can try to sell it, but probably is going to cost you in the long run. Blowing your chances of having a real business relationship with Cover.

I wonder if fangames would be OK to sell on physical media? A lot of doujins sell for pretty much how much they cost to print, which is OK per the fan work rules - you can sell stuff at cost. But they also seem to be OK with artists selling prints for 20-30 bucks each, way more than the cost of printing, meanwhile they copyright struck HoloBass for making way less uploading music that used voice clips as samples to spotify

Because doujins have been considered non-commercial by their very nature and even in the modern digital age of digital distribution most companies tend to turn a blind eye to stuff like dlsite/fanbox/fantia because they know better not to piss the artists off.

With games on the other hand, it's much harder to draw the line of what is considered commercial/for profit and what's not, which is why they tend to be crowdfunded at the most.

Cover is not going to make porn of their idols and sell it so they don't need to defend that market.

Cover may want one day to produce and market their own Holo video games. So they need to be strict about that media option being under their own copyright and that monetisation goes to them.

Simple, just think corpo as if you were the boss. Porn is free stealth advertising, games are direct competition for profit.

Copyright laws in Japan means that doujinshis are ALL illegal no matter what the subject matter is.
It's just that corporations turn a blind eye towards them because it helps promote them for free and it's bad news to restrict and sue doujin makers. There has been cases where companies tell people to not make doujins though.

You can sell fangames at convention. Technically it's illegal but nip companies mostly doesn't care except maybe nintendo. Mostly because the profit is just chump changes. What you can't do is release it commercially in stores like steam. Because even shitty fan games can make decent profit if it reach wider audiences.
