What's the appeal of streams?

I try watching streams from time to time, but most are absolute snoozefests. I don't really understand the appeal. Do people watch them in full, or do they just watch them for a few minutes at a time before moving on to something else? I wish vtubers would just edit down their streams to 10-30 minute videos like normal YouTubers do.

Live streams suck and eat up all my time. I don't remember what I liked about vtubers anymore. I just watch them like a zombie doing the same thing forever. Maybe I'm expecting to find the spark I had 3 years ago, although I hardly even remember what that felt like.

It's an inherit parasocial relationship, anon. You like the streamer, and thus are willing to sit through them playing a game because you want to experience it with them. Good streamers also have minimal dead time, so you get to hear them talk and interact with them through chat and donations.
If you don't have an inherit like for the streamer, you're also unlikely to like their streams (unless if it's a weird fun meme).

I understand the appeal for the streamer but not the viewer. Why would I want to watch what's basically a let's play series without breaks? The only interruptions are to reply to donations.

Too much work, anon. For some of them even streaming is Hardcore mode. Cover could also opt to hiring editors but they choose to waste the revenue on making some bootleg Genshin game.

The appeal comes from the streamer. If you're watching your oshi, you should be able to sit down and watch the full stream without getting bored. Anyone who thinks that most streams are actually interesting content is just deluding themselves.

Streaming was a mistake.
We need to go back to the golden era of edited, curated videos full of kino.
The only livestreams for vtubers should be concerts and special events, and even those shouldn't go beyond two hours.

The only streams I watch with full attention are gaming streams that I'm interested in, and they're usually collabs too.

I don't usually give streams my 100% attention when I put them on, unless its a game I really enjoy or I'm active in the chat. I had a lot of fun with the latest Mario arc that was going on.
Other times I just have it on and watch it occasionally while playing a game or something. Like others said its nice to have someone like Luna or Watame on when you're winding down.

Feels fucking great being able to pause at any time so I don't miss a single second of my oshi, or being able to freely rewind 10 seconds to hear her cute response to something again. Plus I can watch the entire stream the whole way through for maximum viewer retention so I'm not hurting my oshi's algorithm performance.

There are three reasons to watch a stream.
1. You like the particular game that's being played. Though it's rare that you would want to choose a VTuber for that.
2. They are chatting and you are interested in their personality. This gets boring after you learned about them and it just keeps repeating from then on.
3. They actually put in some effort to make an entertaining show that's not like the 99% of their other low effort streams. Realize that most people only make anywhere from 0 to maybe 5 worthwhile streams in a whole year.

Background noise mainly. They all have so wonderful voices that just listening to them without really processing what they say just calms my nerves.
Sometimes they have an engaging personality and have meaningful things to say, sometimes they collab with others with whom contrast really well, sometimes they play a game I really like and want to see if they like it/how they hold up. Those are the occasions I pay more attention to streams.

The sole appeal of livestreaming over other content is directly interacting with your streamer.
Twitch streamers, for all the rap they get doing lazy shit, ended up that way because it maximizes audience interaction for the effort needed.

While things like TTS, soundboards, and reading/reacting to donos right away may disrupt whatever "content" a streamer is doing, it enhances live interaction which is the real content people go for.
Thus, otherwise passive viewers are encouraged to become active participants, playing their part in creating a unique experience together with streamer, rather than just watching it.
That feeling is incredibly powerful and is the modus operandi of OG streaming places like Twitch.

So the real appeal isn't simply watching someone play a video game live.
It's about how (You) can influence through any manner someone playing that video game live, such that novel content is made and felt by the rest of the crowd;
something (You) took direct part in creating.
