I don't remember the entire context, but there was one time I was on /tv/ or something and I linked a Veibae clip and some normie, clearly disgusted by VTubers, was like "So they're imitating the way Japanese people speak now too." Now this was probably like 2020, pretty early in VTuber history, and I had only just recently discovered them myself at the time because I stumbled upon Veibae while looking for something else. I knew VTubers like Kizuna Ai were a thing but I didn't know VTuber streamers were a thing and I didn't know English-speaking ones.
Anyway, as I've come to learn a lot more about VTubers over the years, and have seen a lot of EN VTubers that actually DO lean into sounding like Japanese people, with random Japanese words in their speech and putting on a more "anime sounding" voice. So I look back at that encounter and think it's hilarious that of all people that someone would level that complaint at, he would choose to do it for Veibae, who famously does not put on a fake voice or personality at all and would not be caught dead speaking Japanese. There are many things you can complain about with Veibae but "She sounds like she's pretending to be a Japanese person" is not one of them.
