It appeared to be just a very rare random chance, but a database leak showed the code that controlled it, and it turns out it was manually set by admins and not actually random.
The gold kappa train is a rare variant of the hype train, the difference being that everyone who participates in it temporarily gets the golden kappa emote instead of the other random shitty emotes that they give out. It is unknown whether it is truly random or also given out manually by admins. This one started while she was AFK though so that's decent evidence for it being actually random.
