As for actually losing her nipples, given it was an infection, it would be pretty unlikely she needed amputation unless it was extremely bad, in which case it would affect her breasts as well. And if that was the case, she'd have been in constant pain.
Also if her nipples were necrotic, it means the tissue is completely dead and cannot be revived or salvaged so the only solution is for them to be removed.
