When you've just been deeply impressed by story that had even somewhat relatable elements, it's pretty easy to have the THAT'S LITERALLY ME moment. If there's enough relatable elements in a story, your imagination fills the gaps: back when I watched the 1997 Berserk anime of all things, it felt like an extreme medieval fantasy retelling of a certain period in my life, as outrageous as that sounds.
