I dont think peperoni leaves a tasty residue and it would just pull a lot of cheese off so it doesnt make sense to me.
if she was in australia I dont know if they call it margherita there but they do it here in UK. she probably assume margherita is some gross shit so get something she knows, and can turn it into what she wants.
I believe this over the peperoni flavour theory but I am not 100% its more like 70% (30% its the residue theory)
