Yes, idol can *work* with males. And yes, there are many types of nu-idols with different target audiences - heck, there are even idol groups consist of literally JAV actresses.
However, traditionally, idols don't get too intimate with males. Working / business is one thing, getting initiate is another. It's really up to (You) to decide whether the male-involved collabs were for work or leisure purpose.
Thinking that VTubers collabing with males is the same as female idols working with males isn't really accurate. Most of the VTubers collabs were initiated by the VTubers themselves, happened because they enjoy the others' company instead of solely for work purpose, and could be easily cancelled without any negative feedback on their careers.
