But to people like Kiara who go in without being exposed to the community, guides, or anything else, large quantities of emeralds and diamonds (and elytra) represent near-unattainable wealth in resources and thus the end-goal of the game. There is nothing else beyond getting them. Obtaining small quantities is to be celebrated, because you can use them to get tools to maybe, in the future, get large amounts of resources, but why build anything else? Buildings are decorative. Redstone contraptions can't produce anything of note that compares with the wealth from emeralds.
They can fool themselves into thinking that they're building things as 'side-quests' or temporary bases as part of their quest to get resources, but once you plonk thousands of emeralds in front of them, it's equivalent to basically constantly whispering to them that the whole game is a sham and nothing they do there is going anywhere. Then they basically go hollow.
