I think his upbringing wasn't necessarily bad, but he constantly used to run into trouble that was usually of his own making. he had to switch several schools as a kid, has done a bunch of random shit for money, etc. it's easy to see how he just doesn't give a fuck about whatever station of life the decades have placed him in, and him being some animated 2D avatar now definitely adds to the comedy of the situation. Hakka is pretty similar, I think he's done a ton of career changes too and is very much a "do things on a whim" sort of personality. on the side with the girls, there's obviously Ame and her tons of weird life experiences, but I think those have turned her in a different direction: she likes experimenting, but she's very conscious of how things pan out. the rest of the EN girls and boys seem to have had really tame lives up til this point, as far as I know, and risk-taking isn't second-nature to them at all. it's an uneven comparison to Vesper though, since they're obviously younger and less "lived" than him.
