The problem is that the bigger an instance gets, the more it feels the same as every other big instance, because everyone's activity will tend to pull in the same things (every road leads to cat pics).
It makes it difficult for casual users to use because Mastodon doesn't do a bunch of tracking to tailor everything to your interests like the other social networks do. But with a disjoint network, you could join the network for gaming, or the network for anime, and so on. And this would give you the ability to post to Mastodon, and do many other things like read blogs or watch videos all through ActivityPub, and all directly relevant to your interests with no celebrities, sports, or other irrelevant things invading your feed.
