He was pressured by his co-workers and very likely by management to handle the case of Reimu's harassment since it was coming from his fanbase, so he was forced to "disavow" parasocialism and tell them they're not friends.
The moment he noticed his numbers falling off a cliff because of that, he BEGGED for them to stay saying he actually enjoys the parasocialism and blablabla. But it was too late.
Then the second impact event was when he got doxxed and was shown to have a gf which turned the remaining chink horde away from him. Again those things were just out of his control, he is just coping now with the whole "new me" bullshit.
