Keeping up with every second of every stream is exhausting, even as background noise.
Lots of big streamers have dedicated highlight channels that condense 50+ hours of streams into an 8 hour highlight, and it takes a few days to watch those too, while paying full attention to the videos.
I prefer that type of format to clips, and I mostly watch VODs of games that interest me from vtubers I like for many different reasons.
Sometimes those reasons are game skill, or banter with chat, perhaps how they talk about the game or improvise, other times I sincerely like and connect with their personalities and I can watch them play anything as long as they get into their comfort zone.

My oshi Reimu streams a loooooooooot thus keeping up with all of her precious moments is a daunting task, nonetheless I greatly enjoy commenting on her live streams and I have enjoyed her playthrought of breath of the wild because of how excited she gets when exploring, fighting and looting and how enthusiastic she is about the game.
