KF was going to be a mobile game but got cancelled before release due to a lack of interest and production issues. The anime was commissioned to promote the mobile game, but when the mobile game went under the anime project lost all meaning. Since contracts were already signed, they handed it to a lowest-bidder 3d studio to just shit out something cheap to fulfill contract obligations with basically no oversight.
The 3d studio, an indie passion project, took this as a challenge. KF ended up being a runaway success and blew up practically overnight despite the low budget. The unplanned success made the folks in charge look bad, so they canned the contract, pushed the studio out of it, smeared its director publicly, tried to steal credit for the success of the anime and then handed the sequel to a different studio. All of this went public and it blew up in their faces. Kemono Friends remains one of those enduring corporate humiliations, like the Kokoro Connect bullying incident.
