The lesson is hiatuses kill everything. Same shit happened to berserk, hxh, gura, laplus (to a lesser extent), aot, GOT (books), KKC, LDRs etc. If you want people to remain interested, gotta at least tell them when the next chapter is coming out. Even then, if it's too long of a wait they'll lose interest. Even if the quality lowers, they'll stick around just because it's actually there. Short pauses can build suspense (distance makes the heart grow fonder or whatever), but only to a certain limit, before the hype dies.
How creators don't realize this when there's so many examples is absolutely baffling.
