People saying that these kind of tournaments are assembled for fun (much like the PuyoPuyoTetris one from a few months back) and nothing else are missing the point.
For starters, the japanese mentality essentially forces them to give it all regardless of the reasoning behind the tournament. While its obvious they laugh at their mishaps and enjoy themselves at what they're doing, everything they do is competitively and the efforts are to be looked upon their fans and everyone else watching them. Now mix this with the EN way of handling tournaments and it's no different to the average MOBA scene in where the Asean region is overwhelmingly superior to America and Europe for example.
The other issue comes from the marketable standpoint, which is the one of the unfortunate consequences of Cover going IPO: chuubas participating in these kind of games, willingly or not, have to show their skills and prove their worth. Tournaments are the best way to attract investors in the company in the same way as its been with the HoloFes in some level, and a solid performance is what will ensure sponsors while the shitters end up in the gutter.
