While I have seen people watch archives of dead chuubas for the first time, it's more so that it's not lost to time.
Sure I'm not going to rewatch all of Lulu's or Coco's stuff tomorrow, but what about in a year? 5 year? 10 years?
Better to have it archived than not, if you've got the space.

They were vtubing -as we know it TODAY- (audience interaction with chat using 3D models) on niconico, not simply before Kizuna Ai, but a full TWO YEARS before her, on fucking 2014. Their songs are on youtube but to catch the vods you'll have to check nyaa.si or niconico (the niconico episodes cut out quite a lot of content that was only available in the raws on nyaa.si).

I am 31. I watch vtubers when I have the time and never even catch up with vods that are still up. I'm can understand on some degree people going back to hear a particular karaoke rendition of a song but hoarding for hoarding's sake data that you don't really use seems a bit pointless.

I don't get why you think it's so dumb to archive videos, they're thrown up on archive sites all the time. There's always going to be someone who wants to watch a long gone video. It's not like everyone is hoarding 500 petabytes of chuuba videos. Just browse and download the ones you want to watch that aren't up anymore.

Look at it this way: If you look into history, even recent media history like movies, researchers are CONSTANTLY bemoaning how major things were lost. And while occasionally there's some sort dramatic, burning of the library of Alexandria event, usually it's just people deciding it wasn't important, or that SURELY someone else saved this, or similar excuses. Until one day it WAS important, and when someone looked they realized that, as far as they could tell, no full copies existed. Sometimes there aren't even partial copies.
THAT, to me, is the main thing archiving is preventing. One day some chuuba will be recognized as important to the history of the hobby, maybe even long after they're dead in real life, and we can only hope some autist saved all their VoDs before they were deleted.

Of course some people watch archives but that's not always the main point. The reason people archive is the sentimental value which is highly personal. People save happy memories so they can treasure them throughout their life and we all make the choice of what's important enough to carry into the future. For some people it may be family videos, for someone else it could be a music collection, or a vtuber. There's no right or wrong here. Archive if you want, don't if you don't.

Archival in itself is a hobby, also not enough big vtubers have retired and shoahd their channel for it to be relevant. If something akin to vtubers are around in 20 years there will be some youtube channel talking about vtuber history and vtuber archives.

Sure, right now, I don't feel like watching the whole catalogue, but what if someday I want to tackle them all daily just like the ol' days?
I just like having the options open, and considering my autism, I probably will do some pretend scheduled stream watching like that in a year or so.
