I just realized it, vtubers are basically modern-day virtual geishas. They're trained in various arts, and they're here to entertain you - sing, dance, play games, converse and tease. To geishas, fan service comes first, so adhering to that principle is the norm, but western bandwagoners don't get that, so that's the distinction between a proper vtuber and a twitch thot with an anime avatar, and that's why this generates so much seethe.
I don't mean to start shit using my favorite virtual geishas, but a recent newcomer really encapsulates everything about entertaining the audience.
