For me it was very scary, but the best decision I've ever made. I've since come back to my own country, for unrelated reasons, but now I can understand most of what chuubas / anime / tv shows say, I can read JP twitter and 2ch (using the browser extensions for all the kanji I don't know) and it's super fun.
I literally understood as much of FWMC's JP zatsu as I can of their regular EN streams (which is like 95% because of their thick accent)
