are vtubers required to wipe their previous body of work and online presence as some kind of rebranding strategy, or is that just a preference?

Nah. If you look close enough, you'll find their old videos, plus Cover is looking for experienced streamers these days. Of course, much like the indie vtubers, deleting traces of their past is up to them.

Thats not true, Aloe choose to keep her old shit up like most Holos do. Ame had her stuff up until schizos dug too deep and she deleted almost everything. Its up to the person if they want a clean start or not if they're an indie, as a corporate vtuber that reincarnates its up to the company if they want to leave their stuff up but most companies just delete everything.
