Fellowship came out in 2001, and a lot of people were still playing N64s back then. Having looked this up just now the first trailer for Fellowship was Feb '01 and the following half year was basically the last major year for the N64, because the OG Xbox and GameCube would come out near the end of '01. So my rrat is they got the N64 or OoT very late into the console's lifespan. Or they just read the books first, I mean I did and I had several friends who did, the series just was not a household name yet until the Peter Jackson movies and was more of just something nerds read (much like GoT).
