Is it true that vtubers/celebrities never get used to abuse? That you can never truly "grow tough skin"? That some vtubers at some point just stop checking their comments to prevent psychological damage?

When henya first joined Vshojo, she had Vshojo staff read Twitter and send her important tweets so she didn't have to go there herself. After seeing that most of the hate from her past life didn't carry over, she started checking Twitter by herself again. She seemed genuinely glummed out one day when ran across a brown vtuber memes tweet that was shitting on her finally being able to do the 3D concert she always wanted to do. She'll also sometimes unconsciously hum Harry Potter music only to stop herself abruptly when she realizes what she's humming.

Nobody gets used to abuse. You can't even say that sociopaths and psychopaths get used to these sorts of things. In a way they're not affected the same to begin with, but the way it does affect them is usually through fragile ego which incites uncaring retaliation. To stop caring would be to never really care much in the first place, and the more you think they rally care because they act unaffected, the more they're either hiding or don't actually care. It's kind of paradoxical, but it's also just very human in the end. Even incels that have a psychotic break care about other people and how others think of them and treat them, if they didn't then they wouldn't make their grievances such a huge part of their daily life.

So, of course a vtuber is still going to care. You'll know you have a real one (or a real martyr) when they can't hide that they care about the mean stuff very well, but they don't give up on their haters.

Online harassment has an effect, but it's NOTHING compared with being yelled on person, I never got yelled at besides my family when I was a child, but I seen people getting yelled on person and sometimes they go to the bathroom to cry, a random chat saying to you kys is nothing compared with that, even if they're in the thousands

I've experienced most of it, including yelling, physical violence, harassment, stalking, and antis stirring up daily hate bandwagons. What really matters is the feeling that you can't escape. You can be really naive and say just go offline, but much of modern life is entangled with online participation. This is more so when you're a content creator. It's naive to say that it's not as serious for stalking, threats, harassment, and people constantly trying to bring you down and find weaknesses or make out any distance or defensive posture as a sign that you're a bad person, in the scene where you actively work. I would say that most people that say this kind of tough guy comment haven't been physically attacked in public and had people walk away and avoid getting involved. It needlessly glorifies harassment and violence in the physical world, and diminishes the harassment you face in the virtual world. They're not separated, you have to be active in both, and you probably have to deal with things in both. There is no escape.

Stalking isn't a online thing, it already is physical because the person can fucking kill or rape you or something like that, but as I said both are bad, but I can't fathom how violence and screams on your face can compare with insults on chat, and it isn't like half of the chat is full of that, in the vtuber sphere harassment like that is way more light than on the streamers sphere, with the chat velocity I would be surprised if you see even one hate comment per stream, the biggest problem is when they use superchat yet hate superchats rarely happens and when they happen hundreds of the others viewers shut it down
The only way to get burned from hate comments is if you search here and 5ch, but that is your mistake to think there's civilized communication here

And I can, because I've been in both situations. You're thinking about things in an abstract way, but when you have a torrent of awful things raining down on you and some guy on a basket weaving bbs debates about the difference in severity of different parts of that torrent, then it really doesn't matter. You can think what you want and organize it in a way that makes sense for you. But for the people that go through it, you have nothing to useful to offer, because like you said you can't fathom it.
