Niji JP was, at one point, the clear frontrunner in Japan. Hololive was able to circumvent this by getting popular around the world with clips, translations, and individual interesting talents. Niji JP did not have the same interesting individual talents that appeal to non-Japanese people and with the combination of fans not clipping/translating, they lost the race in the West before it even began. That is why what you explained happened. Niji's attempts to pander to the West came as a response to Hololive getting popular with their JP talents in the West and then Myth, but they lost the race and didn't get that grass roots momentum from the fans.

Doesn't really make any sense. Most of those old Hololive and Nijisanji members come from the same streaming site and were part of the same friend groups. Only coincidences led them to end up in different companies.

Nijisanji streamers that could've gone viral in the West ignored their potential Western fanbase or went out of their way to avoid them. People's memory is failing a lot about this right now but things like Coco's weekly Reddit Meme Review or talents playing into the one joke they got assigned by the Western fandom made them stick their landing. Also, remember that this was around 2020, back when most of Hololive's hard hitters had not reached their peak potential yet so you couldn't say that one group was inherently more entertaining than the other. The issue with Niji has always been the fans and their culture. Niji fans always tended to be a lot more elitist (NijiID fans being the perfect example of this). They reveled in the fact that Nijisanji was the top vtuber company then and that they were fans of said company. I suspect that's the reason why they have such a weird fetish with the company that any criticism towards Nijisanji is taken as a criticism of their own character. It's like an advanced stage of consolefaggotry. Hell, even sports fags are willing to call for their team owner's head if shit started going south.
