Same reason why Japanese people go "Wow, your pronunciation is so good!" when you talk to them. It's just courtesy.

How would you know if your pronunciation is ACTUALLY as good as a native? They stop complimenting you.

From those man on the street interview channels by bilingual channels, most (young adult) Japanese are just happy if gaijin even put forth an earnest effort. They appreciate that the whitu piggus are attempting to bow to the culture rather than be loud dumb amerifats yelling in English and thinking increasing volume somehow increases comprehensibility.

As another side note along the same lines, those same channels also ask if native Japs are offended if female weebs wear kimonos or whatever. Overwhelmingly they're like "so long as it's properly fitted and worn, nah, whatever, good for them".
