The Aki Basho for 2023 has concluded.
It came down to the wire with a playoff between ozeki Takakeisho and rookie Atamifuji. Takakeisho had a lot to prove coming into this basho as he was in danger of being demoted. Atamifuji initially debuted in the top division in 2022 with a disastrous 4-11 score. With his return to makuuchi, he was the sole leader going into the final day with 11 wins. However, he lost his final match against ex-ozeki Asanoyama, bringing him to the playoff. Ultimately Takakeisho prevailed and won the yusho. However, it was not without controversy as he appeared to utilize a henka move (considered unseemly, especially for someone of his status).
Is this the beginning of a new chapter in sumo? Takakeisho might be considered for the sport's highest rank of yokozuna with 1 more yusho. Atamifuji, though he lost this time, might have proven himself as a new top contender.
