Memorize kana, read through Tae Kim to pickup some basic words and grammar rules and then jumped into reading my first visual novel using Yomichan that interested me which was Ley Line. It was really hard and tedious at first but it was a nice feeling when I'd read an entire sentence without needing a look up.
I also made flash cards in Anki from words I'd see in the game. I used the setup from the anime cards website since other people seemed to have success with it on /jp/.
