You'd be surprised how many odd things get launched up to see how they'd react to going into upper atmosphere and space.

While not space related exactly but during the Teapot nuclear tests in 1955,the US government staged cans and bottles of beer and soda at different ranges from a nuclear test to see what would happen to them if they survived the blast.
It was officially listed as "The Effect of Nuclear Explosions on Commercially Packaged Beverages" It's been declassified and shows their methodology and testing procedures.
Still safely drinkable but flavor changed

Yea the Desert Rock exercises only three sets actually had them going in the area for testing. The rest they were just kinda observers or working out of bases for the tests

It's used as "ballast", basically the helium is heated and injected into the tanks to allow the fuel to be pushed down towards the engines. As you go higher the pull of Earth's gravity isn't doing enough "pulling", so you need to start "pushing" on the fuel instead.
