When people spend money on them, it's a donation made from a sense of gratitude/enjoyment.
It's not like simping because most people who donate aren't thinking "this is surely making me closer to her" or "this will make me her care about me".
This is because VTubers are explicitly not real. You can't go on a date with them, or marry them. The role is an illusion, like a magician at a magic show, or a wrestler in professional wrestling.
It's not like watching regular 3D women stream, where there's this ever-present tease of "maybe I can be the one for her if I just spend enough money/time on her". That's what makes it simping, because it's a delusion, and because the 3DPD usually doesn't explicitly deny it (or she'll even lean into it) because she knows it makes her money.
