1. Soprano ukuleles are those really small, Tiny-Tim esque ukuleles. Concert ones are a bit bigger and people find them a bit more comfortable. Avoid tenor and bass for now.
2. Aim to get a Kala if you can spare the money. They're a great brand for beginner/intermediate level ukuleles. If you've got a tight budget, you can go as low as you want for one. You don't need the "ukulele pack" that is frequently advertised, since it's just a tuner, some spare strings, and a bag.
