Realistically, a family that is solely focused on preserving a bloodline can end up like this, where people would pressure a young woman who somehow couldn't birth the Phoenix with their firstborn, and all that stress is let out on the kids. Then inbreeding often leading to issues and you get a second child who has the Phoenix but is gravely ill. Its like how in FFXIV, with Yotsuyu's plot line, people are thinking she is a stone cold bitch and to the outside, Doma are poor villagers, but on the inside, they sold their children into prostitution to avoid starvation. The devil is in the details, even if you can say those women, Yotsuyu and Annabelle became bitches, its kinda fucked in a lot of ways.
People don't necessarily come out great in that kind of environment, privileged or not. Add onto the slave/master mentality perpetuated by the system and it devolves people into going apeshit when they normally would be decent. Its a world where a lot of people are rewarded for being jackasses.
