I just realized there were not just one, but two completely separate VTubers who essentially threw away the job of a lifetime because they couldn't play Genshin Impact on stream.

Someone explain to me how gachashit came to be so normalized. It's like I stopped paying attention to video games for a few years, and then boom, anime girl slot machine, and people acting like there's nothing at all weird about this.

I remember Horse Armor and Farmville, the way everyone shat on those. Now we come to this, and I don't know how we got here.

Gacha games took mobile like a storm. The resources put in, to the money made is criminal.
Genshin Impact is multiplatform. Copying the best parts of other games. Once they get you to spend money on it, many are stuck because of the investment.
Similar to MMOs, but it's now both time and money.

Belgium and the Netherlands require gambling licenses to run gacha games and sell loot boxes. It's honestly what the entire world should be doing.
Instead these games shut down in those countries because they'd be admitting they're predatory and games like NBA3k had the audacity to show a message asking players to loby their government to allow loot boxes without a gambling license.
Knowing all this it should be pretty obvious why some people would throw away jobs that are easy money for gacha. These people are addicts.

Gacha is just a Japanese repackaging of lootboxes which have been an equally abhorrent thing in video games for a long time. I think the reason why you weren't so aware of them is because they were mostly found in mobile games and most people don't consider games for the phone to be real games. It's only within recent years that they've started porting a bunch of them to the PC because they realized there's a huge untapped market there, and now we're hearing about them a lot more because PC players are getting addicted too.

I will say, I feel that everyone should play at least one gacha game, without spending any money on it, just to gain an understanding of what a 1% chance actually is. I've seen a lot of idiots the last few years with a very poor understanding of statistics and I can't help but think that maybe this would have helped them.

I played that mobile game with the Toaru characters for a while, because I love Toaru characters. After a while I got bored, but I always do with games, so I can't put the blame on the gacha or 1% factor. One thing that annoyed me was the amount of money-like counters (gems, coins, stars...) I couldn't be bothered to tell one from the other or learn what they were used for. And yes, one of them could be bought with money (which I never did)

This is why they’ve exploded so much and unlike older gachas that came with evolution mechanics or adding old characters to the cycle you’re now forced to play the game more often, which again is an admittedly good game, for a particular character. That and the illusion of luck. Slots and gachas have a built in pity system but recently they opted into the shiny pokemon style. 1/4096 to get a shiny but it doesn’t mean at chance 4096 you’ll get the shiny it just means every encounter whether it be 1 or 1000 is 1/4096. So once you pass 50 you think “I’m already over halfway there I might as well try” but genshin does actually have a slightly higher percentage than other games

Gacha earns game companies a lot of money and most governments have completely ignored any form of regulation. No matter how much people complain the gacha business model is extremely profitable for the same psychological reasons that gambling is popular. Most people know that gambling games for kids is another sign of western moral decay but with all the other degenerate shit that is being normalized it tends to get overlooked.

It's a Japan concept that China always ends up copying, but saw the formula and milked their masses hard. Korean's actually redefined the game play style, and eventually China copied the business model of being a professional game company, instead of studios that make and drop IPs every 2 years. The golden culmination of this is Genshin Impact, etc that earn millions and surpassed FGO numbers. The literal holy grail, especially with the revenue possible in western markets.
