Mori is like that stereotype to a T. Japanese are fascinated by her because she's a caricature become real, but also because she's a cute girl and not a drunk Marine making a scene at an Okinawan bordello. They get the impression that if they ever met her IRL she'd beat up their school bullies and then give them a candy.
I mean this in the most positive possible way. She's cultivated a particular image and it works for her, but the disconnect comes from the fact that we in the west don't really have an equivalent stereotype to compare her to.
