They say 「日本語上手ですね!」 and act like your botched japanese is the most impressive thing ever, even if it's actually atrocious - both because they're politne and because most foreigners don't even bother to learn even the most basic Japanese while the nips themselves are awful at language learning so for them that's still impressive.
And frankly most people around the world appreciate you taking an effort to speak their language even if you don't really succeed at it and they ultimately have to resolve to gestured and mimic to communicate with you. If you get laughed at it's because you met genuine assholes.
