every single thing in this movie, even the opening of her monologue, is meant to convince you that there was something horrible and insidious going on at her uncle's ranch. that the reason clarice is so weird stems fundamentally from abuse or molestation, that it's just a sublimation of trauma.
she does clearly suffer from trauma, but this scene in so many ways reveals the heroism underlying clarice. clarice, like her father, is a protector, who couldn't stand the screaming of the lambs. she's an fbi agent who protects victims like the kidnapped senator's daughter.
it's so subtle and immaculately acted.
