The most important things are their image of camaraderie between each other, and staying true to and being comfortable with the character and kayfabe they establish for themselves. People don't want to watch normal boring people. They want to watch interesting people, even if it's a constructed personality. But the audience is attentive enough to know when the streamer is faking it, and one thing hololive streamers are really good at is living as their personality. And when you have handful of interesting people that regularly mention, interact, and collab with each other, you get a multiplying effect. They then create their own memes and in jokes that all of the members and the audience know about that helps to make the viewers more invested in the streamers. You see a sheep, both the streamer and viewers will mention Watame. The streamer starts saying lewd things, the matsuri/senchou line/bottom left is mentioned. Someone taking drugs or getting doped up, then it's Asacoco or the Watson concoction.
After that, there's clips and Asacoco. Vtubers revolve around streamer and audience interaction, but it's hard to know all of the in jokes and memes that develop unless you watch every stream, which nobody really has the time to do. Clips and Asacoco worked as gateways to get your foot in the door for new viewers, or as reinforcement into the "community" that hololive has made for veteran viewers. Asacoco in particular was effective because it was concise and regular, while also making sure to advertise the other members. It also added its own flair to keep viewers coming back. In the end the viewers will start to care for or at least know about all of the members even if they haven't watched them. Then, once they find someone that catches their eye, they establish their oshi(s) and are stuck. It's the same with the meme review. It introduces and reinforces the "character" and in jokes of each member even if only superficially. It was rote, but people always came back to it, both EOPs and JOPs. It's all a positive feedback loop leading viewers back to the hololive community. Combine these multiplying factors together and you get hololive's explosion in popularity.
