If you like to gamble, you can even find the cheapest tickets at about one week prior, but it is riskier since they might actually sell out quick at the cheaper price. You can't negotiate with airlines to give you the cheaper price after buying like you can with a hotel, so give them the middle finger by not paying their ballooned prices. The only caveat to this is that the strategy assumes there is no big national holiday or season where tourism is hot.
