Twitch is all about livestreaming. If you miss a stream you may have missed it forever because VODs are only saved for like two weeks for non subscribers. Following isn't as important for that reason, there are multiple ways to be notified of a stream on twitch and following isn't really important to interact. You don't even need to be following to subscribe or even donate.
