>>65334174Long story short:
-WWF and WCW are in a ratings war and WWF is getting stomped
-One of the WWF's biggest guys, Bret Hart, is a loyal company man. Wants to stay with the WWF, but they're losing so bad that they can't afford to keep him on the contract they signed and agree to part ways amicably
-One problem, Bret Hart has the title right now. He's going to have to drop it before he leaves
-Bret's a company man. He's fine with this and the company made him a star.
-Company wants him to drop it to Shawn Michaels
-Bret HATES Shawn Michaels
-Company wants him to drop it in his hometown of Montreal
-Montreal LOVES Bret
-Bret doesn't want to do this. He's fine with losing the belt on literally the following show since the PPV is on a Sunday and they normally do shows on Monday
-Management agrees.
-Management didn't actually agree. Management is in fact, paranoid, and doesn't want to get humiliated like they did when another one of their talents left and joined the WCW
-Management concocts a plan to force the belt off of Bret by cheating and betraying him
-Plan goes off without a hitch
-During the match, Shawn Michaels puts Bret into his own signature hold. Bret doesn't tap out, but the bell is rung anyway.
-Montreal Screwjob. Literally dozens of documentaries and videos about this event it's so fucking massive within the world of pro wrestling
-Bret spits in the CEO's face
-Spells out WCW while in the WWF's ring after
-Bret goes backstage, and promptly knocks the CEO the fuck out
And that's the Montreal Screwjob in a nutshell.
