>>65368930>>65369122I know people shit on this advice, but if all you want to do is to be able to understand spoken Japanese, genuinely if you have the right mentality, watching a ton of subtitled anime really does help, eventually. You can't just turn your brain off, you have to constantly be thinking about what you're hearing vs what the subs read, but you will eventually start to to pick up on correlations, and use them to make inferences about what the sentence is about. You'll hear a verb with a big long chain of suffixes like tabesaseraretakunakatta, and your brain will go, well, tabe- is the root for to eat, -sase is usually used for causing others to do things, -rare is for passive voice, -taku is used for desire, -naka for negation, and -ta for past tense, and then you just kind of lump those concepts in your brain and out pops someone that doesn't want to be forced to eat. What that doesn't teach you necessarily is to how to construct that long chain of suffixes for yourself if you want to express the thought, so you definitely need grammar if you want to be able to compose sentences, but you can genuinely get to the point where you can start to live translate streams without ever learning how to compose sentences yourself.
