The vocab and syntax make massive differences that single language speakers never seem to understand. Even compared to fairly mediocre human translators, people who aren't even fluent but just dabble casually, high end paid machine translations are still constantly missing very important detail while conveying only direct translations.
It shouldn't be a hard concept to understand at all. If you just take two native english speakers, speaking only english, and they're having a natural conversation, there's always a fuckton of nuance that's lost when you go and try to break down the meaning of their words. This obviously has to be true in every other language. Even deep learning models never seem to acquire this at a rate faster than the meaning changes.
