Music analysis major here:
It's very appropriate that I'm making my comeback just as IRyS finishes her first karaoke stream but listening to the whole thing made me really really want to write another one of these, so this is dedicated to her!
Just to reiterate, I am not a professional vocalist, musician, teacher or trainer. I am just a classically trained string musician, with experience teaching vocalists and choir singers. Everything in this is my own musical opinion and you are free to take what you will to draw your own opinions.
Debuting under the label of VSinger is very appropriate for IRyS. Her singing, as many of her karaoke viewers may already know, is absolutely impeccable. She's got fantastic foundations, her control over her intonation is immaculate and her use of vibrato is tasteful, well-placed, and interesting. It feels more like Mozart string vibrato vs a more sultry, full Tchaikovsky. It is used sparingly, with well-intentioned emphasis on specific notes to add interest and variety, while not overused to be overwhelming. Her sense for rhythm is also magnificent. IRyS stays in time, but she also knows how to play with tempo and swing a little, which is fantastic. Finally, her pronunciation and enunciation is incredible. She's incredibly clear, and you can hear every single syllable as it comes out. It's honestly a thing of beauty.
I don't know how much of this is going to be comparisons to Suisei, but to be completely honest, IRys and Suisei feel like they're on the same exact wavelength when it comes to their singing. But, the most interesting thing is, they aren't on the exact same part of that wavelength. From comparing this single karaoke to everything Suisei's released, IRyS definitely has a more airy, ballad-esque voice, like a graceful and flowing dance. Suisei, on the other hand, has a much more forward, strong, and "here I am!" voice. IRyS has great control of her vocal texture, effortlessly transitioning between more air-filled and more voice-filled singing. It provides great contrast and makes her singing very very interesting, and lets her emphasize the things she wants to. This has the added effect of making her crescendos (builds) and decrescendos (fades) more pronounced, which means that her dynamic range is larger than it first may seem. The only thing I can really point out that was interesting to me, and IDK if this counts as criticism or not, but to my ears, it's quite obvious when IRyS switches between her chest voice and her head voice. It's another similarity to Suisei that I can't help but notice. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but some may consider it something to change so that transitions are smoother. Because of this, IRyS's singing definitely sounds the most comfortable in the most normal spot: high middle, right below her transition point. At the same time, she's got a great lower register. Though it may not go as low as some people like Towa or Kanata, it's very clear and VERY nice. The last thing to note is that her vocal texture is very very... soft and fluffy. Even when she's trying to be strong and push out a big, full sound, it sounds very floof and frankly cute, compared to actual power singing that people like suisei, kanata, and towa can pump out. I can't wait to hear her sing something that makes her REALLY belt and let it just RIIIIIIP out there. Maybe her cover in 2 days will be Ghost... That would be a TREAT.
I'm going to be very excited to follow IRyS's career. One of the most exciting things for me listening is how quickly and effortlessly she transitions from a ballad to a more swing, rap type of song. Also I can't believe I haven't mentioned anything about her emotional injections into her singing. It's fantastic. You can sometimes just SEE her trying to put as much emotion jammed into these songs as possible. Listening to her singing homura made me want to cry all over again. I'm a big sucker for singing so desperately and longingly, and IRyS is incredible at this. It's like she's just physically reaching for my hand as I'm falling and crying out. It's incredible lol. There's so little material as well for me to analyze so I probably am going to come back to IRyS in a month or two and see how... accurate? I am with a little bit more information and data. I really hope she gets the chance to sing OSTs as well. That would be incredible.
Conclusions and TL;DR: IRyS? Incredible. Beautiful singing, great foundations and great personal style combines to make a great singer, vocalist, and performer. Very similar to Suisei, and I can't wait for them to have a singing collab. Make it happen. Please. The Song Singularity will be too strong.
